Either of the images can be specified in File:Picture_name_here.ext, Picture_name_here.ext, or [[File:Picture_name_here.ext]] format. The second image may be another thing of this sort, or something else entirely, such as an image of a founding/namesake person, family estate, ancestral castle, map of territory, etc. A caption and alt text should be used to identify it. Unless a very narrow image, it will use the full width of the infobox.

Both images are optional, and although the first one is the one typically used, use of the second does not require use of the first.
