Water vapor is a relatively common atmospheric constituent, present even in the solar atmosphere as well as every planet in the Solar System and many astronomical objects including natural satellites, comets and even large asteroids. Likewise the detection of extrasolar water vapor would indicate a similar distribution in other planetary systems. Water vapor is significant in that it can be indirect evidence supporting the presence of extraterrestrial liquid water in the case of some planetary mass objects.

Vodna para je plinasta oblika vode. To je eno od stanj vode v hidrosferi. Vodne pare lahko nastanejo pri izhlapevanju ali vrenju tekoče vode ali pri sublimaciji ledu. V nasprotju z drugimi oblikami vode je vodna para nevidna[1]. V tipičnih atmosferskih pogojih se vodna para stalno ustvarja z izhlapevanjem in odstrani s kondenzacijo. Je manj gosta od zraka in sproži konvekcijske tokove, ki lahko vodijo v oblake.

Kot sestavni del zemeljske hidrosfere in hidrološkega cikla je še posebej bogata v Zemljini atmosferi, kjer je tudi močan toplogredni plin skupaj z drugimi plini, kot sta ogljikov dioksid in metan. Uporaba vodne pare kot pare, je bila pomembna za ljudi pri kuhanju in kot pomembna sestavina v proizvodnji energije in transportnih sistemih od industrijske revolucije.

Vodna para je razmeroma pogosta atmosferska sestavina, prisotna tudi v sončnem ozračju, kot tudi v vseh planetih v sončnem sistemu in številnih astronomskih objektih, vključno z naravnimi sateliti, kometi in celo velikimi asteroidi. Prav tako bi odkrivanje ekstrasolarne vodne pare pomenilo podobno porazdelitev v drugih planetarnih sistemih. Vodna para je pomembna, ker je lahko posreden dokaz prisotnosti nezemeljske tekoče vode v primeru nekaterih planetarnih masnih objektov.
