This exposes a loading-groove, cut in the bottom of the breech-block, by which the cartridgemay be inserted into the chamber. A V-shaped cam at the end of therear journal of the base-pin, with which the block revolves, bears againsta flat spring placed in the ordinary position of the tang of the breech-screw, and after passing the centers assists in opening and closing thepiece. Closed.—-By reversing the movement of the block it is kept in placeby the pressure of the spring above referred to on one of the faces of thecam. Fired.—By a back-action side-lock of the usual pattern. Extraction.—By what is essentially a bent lever pivoted below themouth of the chamber, one arm of it playing by means of a stud onits inner surface within a helical groove in the periphery of the breech-Mock. Ejection.—By the acceleration impressed on the block by the flatspring above referred to, when in opening the piece, the resistance ofthe spring is no longer directed toward the axis of revolution.
