English: Excavations below the Stadtkirche St. Dionys (Saint Dionysius church) in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany: soot or lampblack at the western wall of the crypt of the 2nd Saint Vitalis church (St. Vitalis II), erected in the 1st half of the 9th century. These traces bear witness to the candles which were placed here by the pilgrims who wished Saint Dionys to help to the fulfillment of their prayers. — Sorry for the bad image quality: it’s very dark in the excavations and neither flashlight nor tripod are allowed. But I was explicitely allowed to take photographs without flashlight.
Deutsch: Ausgrabungen unter der Stadtkirche St. Dionys in Esslingen am Neckar: Kerzenruß an der Westwand der Krypta der 2. Sankt-Vitalis-Kirche (St. Vitalis II), errichtet in der 1. Hälfte des 9. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Ruß ist eine sichtbare Spur der Kerzen, welche die Pilger hier in der Hoffnung abstellten, St. Dionys möchte ihnen zur Erfüllung ihrer Gebete verhelfen. – Sorry für die schlechte Bildqualität: in den Ausgrabungen ist es sehr dunkel und weder Blitz noch Stativ sind erlaubt. Das Fotografieren ohne diese Hilfsmittel wurde mir jedoch ausdrücklich gestattet. |
